Wind Turbines

Hybrid Foundation “TERRA-MIX System”

Execution: March–May 2011

Project: 4 wind turbines in Tortumanu (Romania) 4–6 layers of “binder-reinforced” structure

General Contractor: STRABAG s.r.l.

Area per turbine: approx. 500 m² (including overhang) Area stabilized with binder (1 layer for access roads and crane pads): approx. 16,300 m²

Wind Turbines

Project Description:

During the ground investigation, it was determined that macroporous loess extends to a depth of approximately 15 meters below the top of the terrain. The consistency ranged from stiff to semi-solid, and the moisture content increased with depth.

Solution:

To ensure sufficient load-bearing capacity, the following procedure was followed: During the foundation work for the wind turbines, IMPULSE COMPACTION was first performed using a grid pattern of 3.0 m x 3.0 m, which required up to three transitions. The gap was compacted in a single pass using so-called “finish points.” The build-up to the foundation was carried out in binder-reinforced layers of 50 cm, using the existing loess as the base material. For three turbines, the build-up was 2.0 m; for one turbine, six layers—that is, 3.0 m—were required. The composition of the binder (lime-cement mixture) was determined in advance based on numerous suitability tests and was monitored and adjusted throughout the construction process. For the access roads and crane pads, the binder-stabilized subgrade was constructed in a single layer, and crushed angular aggregate was used as the wearing course.

Result:

Both the bearing capacity test using a load plate and the test of the soil density/consistency using a cone penetrometer yielded results that met or significantly exceeded the calculated values. Consequently, the settlement remained well below the limit values determined in the settlement analysis.
