Hybrid Foundation “TERRA-MIX System”
Date of Construction: July 2010
Location: Residential complex at Seefeldergasse 30, A-1220 Vienna
Client: BWS Gemeinnützige allg. Bau-, Wohn- und Siedlungsgenossenschaft Reg.Gen.mbH
Area: 3,000 m2
Project Description:
The building site needed to be improved for the construction of a residential complex without a basement. Between the topsoil (humus) and the medium-density gravel layer lies a loosely compacted intermediate layer consisting of silty fine sand to sandy silt, with a thickness of up to 2.6 m. To prevent grain resuspension due to fluctuating groundwater levels and the resulting settlement, excavation and backfilling with lean concrete to a depth of 2.8 m were planned. To shorten the construction period and thereby optimize the construction process, an alternative was sought.
Solution:
The “System TERRA-MIX” hybrid foundation was selected.
Step 1:
Improvement of the silty fine sand and, at the same time, creation of the subgrade with a layer thickness of 45 cm by mixing in a binder tailored to the soil. Evd > 35 MN/m2.
Step 2:
IMPULSE COMPACTION in multiple passes and backfilling of the settlement cones with soil enhanced with the binder.
Step 3:
Construction of a frost-resistant replacement base course “System TERRA-MIX” with a layer thickness of 45 cm by mixing in a binder tailored to the soil. This replacement base course serves as a load-distributing layer over the compaction columns. Evd > 70 MN/m2.
Result:
The use of the “System TERRA-MIX” hybrid foundation system conserved resources, shortened the construction time, and resulted in a very high-quality foundation solution.
Система Hybrid Incorporation
Two innovative methods, one optimal solution for your building project
With the HYBRID FOUNDATION system TERRA-MIX the merits of the IMPULSE COMPACTION system TERRA-MIX meets up with the innovative method of the Replacement Carrying Layer System TERRA-MIX. The result is a foward-looking method which helps you minimise building ressources, to significantly reduce building time and the costs.
