Housing Construction
Hybrid Foundation “TERRA-MIX System”
Project Period: July / August 2013
BV: Seestadt Aspern, Buildings D5a, D8, and D9
Contractor: Porr Bau GmbH
Developers: Urbanbau (D5), EGW Heimstätte (D8), and BWS Group (D9)
Area: total approx. 10,000 m²

Project Scope:
Several building complexes, some up to eight stories tall, were planned for lots D5a, D8, and D9. According to the structural engineer, soil pressures with σ prev. = 100–320 kN/m² had to be taken into account. Some of the foundation slabs were to be placed in fine-grained, silty soils with a thickness of approximately 1.0 m to 3.0 m. Beneath these were gravel soils, some of which were very loosely compacted and were largely located within the groundwater zone!
Solution:
The TERRA-MIX hybrid foundation system was selected. This method was attractive not only because of the rapid and flexible construction progress, but also because the replacement base layer offered many additional benefits: savings on earthwork, geotextile, rolled gravel, and more.
Result:
By installing the replacement subbase layer, which is 50–100 cm thick, optimal load distribution was ensured even in the cohesive areas, and the required performance characteristics, as specified by the structural engineer and geotechnical engineer, were verified throughout the entire area!
